About
Green Screen Zoom Meeting is a viral trend started by the TikTok creator Frankie LaPenna in which someone is seen doing an activity while having a green screen behind them to simulate being at home in a zoom meeting. The trend has been seen as a microcosm of society during the Covid-19 Pandemic, in which many had to be in online meetings while trying to do other activites.
Origin
On April 14th, 2021, Frankie LaPenna[1] uploaded a video in which he was in his car driving down his neighborhood road, with his laptop open in front of him on Zoom, and a foldable green screen was placed between him and his seat in the car. The video showed his driving, panning over to the laptop to show it actively in a zoom meeting, and his live movements, earning him over 45,000 likes in one year and sparking a new series of videos for him and others (shown below).
Spread
On June 5th, 2021, LaPenna would expand the idea and increase the production, by having him do the same bit, but while driving a boat[2] while having someone hold up the greenscreen behind him, netting him over 5.4 million views in one year (shown below).
After a year of continuing to increase the stakes, by having him ride a water slide, or riding a snomobile, LaPenna's biggest video with the green screen effect came after the New York Rangers[3] hockey team had him appear on the center ice during their game to shoot out T-shirts while on a zoom call on April 15th, 2022, earning him over 68 million views in four months (shown below).
