Green Or Blue?

Green Or Blue? refers to a video of a man's hands squeezing and crackling a balloon covered in wax to reveal its color that the viewer has to guess. After the TikToker uploaded the oddly satisfying video in mid-2021, creators started greenscreening the green balloon, inserting image macros and memes that replaced the word "Blue" in the video's text overlay. One of the most notable iterations revealed the 3D Saul Goodman.

Origin

On June 27th, 2021, TikToker^[1] arnienegrete posted a video, wherein, he'd covered balloons in dried wax only to crush them to reveal the ballon's color, prompting the viewer to guess the balloon color before the unveiling. The second balloon that he squeezed in the video was either green or blue. After the TikTok text-to-speech function read the question, the balloon was revealed to be green. Over the course of 14 months, the video received roughly 32.4 million plays and 2.1 million likes (shown below, left).

On November 17th, 2021, TikToker^[2] rendyoho used the video to greenscreen the "Super Idol": video underneath the crackling wax. Over the course of nine months, the video received roughly 144,800 plays and 10,400 likes (shown below, right).

Spread

On November 20th, 2022, TikToker^[3] a777mogus uploaded a proper greenscreen template of the TikTok, making the text-to-speech read, "Green or Green?" Over the course of nine months, the video received roughly 22,100 plays and over 860 likes (shown below, left). TikTokers used the template as well as the original video going into the remainder of 2021. For instance, on November 21st, 2021, TikToker^[4] jalalpro_one posted an iteration that referenced Cristiano Ronaldo's 'SIUUUU' celebration, receiving roughly 14.8 million plays and 1.2 million likes in nine months (shown below, right).

In 2022, the template and meme received increasingly viral iterations. For instance, sometime before May 9th, 2022, TikToker saulgoodmanplayz posted a video (since-deleted) that revealed the 3D Saul Goodman from Better Call Saul beneath the wax shell. Evidence of the TikTok can be seen in a duet uploaded on May 9th, 2022 by TikToker^[5] hf_tripp (shown below, left). TikToker^[6] saulgoodmanplayz reuploaded the video on May 19th, 2022, earning roughly 2 million plays and 311,800 likes in three months (shown below, right).
