Gotta Be One Of My Favorite Genders refers to an image of a Black man posing in front of a car with his hands folded in front of him and an on-screen caption reading, "Shout out to women's day fr 🤞 Gotta be one of my favorite genders." The image first appeared online in March 2021 and saw considerable use as an exploitable meme format over the following months.

Origin

On Monday, March 8th, 2021, International Women's Day was celebrated. On that date, an unknown Instagram user posted an image of himself to his Story posing in front of a car with his hands folded and his feet pointing to the left and right uncomfortably (shown below).

According to an exchange of Twitter DMs with Know Your Meme, the image came up on a friend of Twitter^[9] user @HamAcavs' Instagram and they screenshotted it, finding the man's pose amusing. They then began sharing and spamming it on private Instagram^[10] meme page @JuicyBigNut's Discord channel, where new variations were made, with an unknown user adding the caption, "Shout out to women's day fr 🤞 Gotta be one of my favorite genders. I fw men too if anyone was wondering" (shown below) JuicyBigNut first shared the post on his Instagram^[11] page on International Women's Day, after which it went viral.

On March 8th, 2021, Instagram^[1] user @goddamnyoudirtybitch reposted the image. This is one of the earliest known reposts.

On March 24th, Twitter^[2] user @arcteryxcargos posted a cropped version of the image, removing the bottom caption reading "I fw men too if anyone was wondering (shown below). This is the most common version of the image. The tweet went viral, gaining over 239,000 likes and 21,600 retweets in two months. On March 25th the image was shared by Tumblr^[3] user firepillar, garnering over 10,000 notes in the same span of time.

People soon began photoshopping and redrawing various aspects of the image to change the context. For example, on March 26th, Instagram^[4] user @josephinesmemes posted a photoshopped version replacing the man with an anime character (shown below, left). On March 27th, Redditor u/abatarrr posted a similar photoshop to /r/ShingekiNoKyojin^[5] (shown below, right).

On April 26th, Twitter^[6] user @putinaspliff posted a version of the image with the text edited to read, "shout out to lesbians day," garnering over 95,000 likes and 9,800 retweets in a month (shown below).

Over the course of late April throughout May, new variations of the image increased as users continued to photoshop various aspects of it. The image became considerably popular on Tumblr and Instagram at this time. For example, on May 15th, Tumblr^[7] user terezibug posted a photoshopped version reading "shout out to Princess Peach," garnering over 3,000 notes in 10 days (shown below, left). On May 23rd, Instagram^[8] user @boomer.jim posted a new version of the meme referencing welding, garnering over 20,000 likes in two days (shown below, right).
