Gothfield refers to a fan art trend in which people draw Garfield in goth clothing, often with female features. The trend began in late 2021, primarily appearing on Twitter.
Origin
On November 14th, 2021, Twitter user @pupkittyfan1[1] posted the earliest known artwork of Garfield as a goth girl, gaining over 1,200 retweets and 10,000 likes in five days (shown below).
Spread
On November 16th, 2021, @pupkittyfan1[2] made the first post with the hashtag "#gothfield" (shown below, left). This caused the hashtag to spread on Twitter over the following days as people posted their artwork based on the concept. One of the highest engagement examples was posted by @momoechisArt,[3] which gained over 2,000 retweets and 10,000 likes in three days (shown below, right). The trend was also covered by wegotthiscovered.[4]
