Goth Family Portrait With Non-Goth Son refers to a viral family photograph of an emo or goth family whose young son is the only one not dressed in goth attire. The portrait was posted to the /r/me_irl subreddit in November 2016 and gained viral spread over the following years as an object labeling and image macro format, where the non-goth boy is used to represent the black sheep in a situation.
Origin
On November 30th, 2016, Redditor TheScientist-273 posted a family photograph of a goth family where the young son is the only non-goth to /r/me_irl,[1] garnering over 5,300 upvotes in six years (shown below, left). The photo may originate from awkardfamilyphotos.com,[2] however, this is unconfirmed. On December 12th, 2016, eBaum's World[3] shared an image macro using the image in a listicle that gained over 131,000 views in six years (shown below, right). It was reposted online numerous times, including by Facebook[4] page Dark Humor in December 2017, garnering over 1,500 reactions and 600 shares in five years.
Spread
The format continued to spread over the following years in further image macros and as an object-labeling format. On March 9th, 2018, Redditor FlokisonUbbe posted a new version of the meme to /r/funny,[5] captioned, "When your son is going through a phase," garnering over 59,000 upvotes in four years (shown below, left). On June 15th, 2019, Tumblr[6] user kaijuno posted another version of the meme about the corvid family of birds, garnering over 118,000 notes in three years (shown below, right).
On November 24th, 2020, Redditor GravyxNips posted another version of the meme to /r/memes,[7] garnering over 54,000 upvotes in two years. On October 7th, 2022, Redditor KevinSupreme2505_PH posted a version of the meme to /r/dankmemes[8] captioned "arrives in hell" with each family member labeled as someone who deserves to be in hell except the son, garnering over 44,000 upvotes in two weeks (shown below). On October 13th, the same Redditor posted the meme to /r/memetemplatesofficial,[9] garnering over 4,000 upvotes in six days.
