Gorilla Sofa or Gorilla Couch refers to a series of AI-generated images of gorilla-shaped couches that went viral throughout 2024, inspiring various memes. Conceptualized by an AI design Facebook page, the furniture designs were later implemented by a Chinese manufacturer and offered for purchase.

Origin

On April 20th, 2024, the AI design Facebook^[1] page and website^[2] Inspiring Designs posted a collection of AI-generated images of Gorilla-shaped sofas, with gorillas' arms serving as armrests and their chests and stomachs as their back and cushions. On Facebook, the post garnered over 13,000 reactions and 9,500 shares in nine months (cover image shown below).

On April 21st, @inspiringdesignnet posted images from the collection to its TikTok^[3] account, where the video (shown below) received over 508,000 likes in nine months.

Spread

On April 24th, 2024, the TikTok^[4] page @home.creations13 posted a similar video that received over 136,000 likes in nine months (shown below).

On May 1st, 2024, the Facebook^[5] page Dad's Puns posted the earliest viral caption meme based on one of the images. The post (shown below) garnered over 32,000 reactions and 21,000 shares in eight months.

On May 5th, 2024, X^[6] user @anandmahindra made a post about the couch that received over 1,000 reposts and 20,000 likes in eight months. On July 20th, TikTok^[7] user @mikegotchalk made a video about a Gorilla Couch that received over 527,000 likes in six months (shown below).

Following the viral popularity of the Gorilla Couch images and videos, Chinese furniture distributor Sun Yao Furniture started selling^[8] Gorilla-shaped couches inspired by the AI designs in July 2024 (video^[9] shown below).

More memes based on the images of the couches were circulated on X, Instagram, Facebook and other websites in the second half of 2024.
