About

Goose the Cat, also known as Chewie the Cat, is a feline character in the Captain Marvel film and comic book series produced and released by Marvel. In the comics, Chewie is part of the sace species known as "Flerken."

Origin

Goose the cat, originally named "Chewie," first appeared in the comic book Giant-Size Ms. Marvel #1 in April 2006 (character shown below). The character would not be referred to by name until September 2006's Ms. Marvel Vol. 2 issue 5.[1]


Spread

On September 18th, 2018, Marvel released a poster for the 2019's Captain Marvel film (shown below, left). That day, iO9 writer Jill Pantozzi tweeted a blown-out version of the poster that revealed Goose. She wrote,[2] "I'M SORRY I HAD TO COMPLETELY BLOW OUT YOUR POSTER @captainmarvel BUT HELLO KITTTTTTTY!" The tweet received more than 40 retweets and 200 likes in four months (shown below, right).


On December 3rd, 2018, Marvel released the second trailer for the film. This was the first trailer to feature the character. Within two months, the video received more than 30 million views.

Character Poster

On January 16th, 2019, Marvel Studios[3] released a series of character posters for the film, including one for Goose. They captioned the photograph, "50 Days. See Marvel Studios’ #CaptainMarvel in theaters March 8th, and check out these brand-new character posters." The post received more than 2,400 retweets and 11,000 likes in 24 hours (shown below, left).

Over the next 24 hours, fans expressed their excitement for the character and the film (examples below, center and right).

That day, Twitter[4] published a Moments page about the character posters.
