"Good Question" is a memorable quote uttered by the titular character in the film Shrek. In the film, Shrek sarcastically says the line when asked why he, an ogre, not Lord Farquaad, saved Princess Fiona. A screen capture of Shrek saying the line has since been used as a reaction image macro online.

Origin

On April 22nd, 2001, the film Shrek was released in the United States. In the film, when Shrek rescues Princess Fiona from a dragon, Fiona asks why Lord Farquaad did not rescue her.[1] Shrek responds, "Good question. You should ask him that when we get there" (clip below).



On April 15th, 2019, Redditor [5] egarciat posted a template of the "Good Question" format for use in caption image macros on the /r/Shrek subreddit (shown below).

That day, Redditor [2] ThiccSandwich69 posted a screenshot of Shrek saying the line on the /r/dankmemes subreddit. They captioned the image "When mom asks why your homework folder is more than 10 terabytes." The post received more than 8,600 points (98% upvoted) and 40 comments (shown below, left).

The Redditor[3] then posted the image as the punchline to a joke about the /r/dankmemes-Instagram War. The post received more than 15,000 points (98% upvoted) and 50 comments (shown below, center).

Throughout the day, others used the format as the punchline to jokes about the apprehension to explain an embarrassing detail (example below, right).

That day, the website StayHipp[4] published a story about the memes.
