About

Gonna Prank Dad When He Gets Home is a four-panel exploitable image macro captioned "gonna prank dad when he gets home" showing YouTuber Deji (ComedyShortsGamer) holding a handful of shaving cream and hiding by the front door to smack his dad in the face, with his dad never arriving at the door. The meme is sourced from a 2013 YouTube video titled "Prank Gone Wrong" and became the subject of redraws and variations over the following years, depicting various fatherless characters waiting for their dad to get home.

Origin

On August 10th, 2013, YouTuber[1] Deji, then ComedyShortsGamer, posted a video titled "Prank Gone Wrong" where he waits in hiding by the front door with a handful of shaving cream for his dad to get home so he can smack his dad in the face with it. His dad enters the door but notices the camera and cautiously approaches, catching Deji's hand and reversing the smack on him. His dad laughs, "Ha, gay," and then walks off. The video (shown below) gained over 3.5 million views in nine years.

The earliest known meme using the video is an image macro uploaded by iFunny[2] user NuggetSniffer on February 13th, 2015, captioned, "gonna prank my dad when he gets home." Under the caption are four panels, one showing Deji putting the shaving cream in his hand then three others consisting of the same image of Deji waiting at the door, his father never arriving, suggesting that he abandoned him (shown below). The image gained over 30 smiles in seven years.

Spread

The meme was recreated and reposted by numerous social media accounts over the following years. On December 22nd, 2015, Facebook[3] page Welcome to the Internet posted a version of the meme with numbered days on each image, joking that he waited 817 days for his dad to return, gaining over 12,000 reactions and 1,500 shares in seven years (shown below).

The meme inspired redraws and photoshops, often replacing Deji with fatherless characters from various franchises. For example, on January 5th, 2016, Facebook[4] user Kit Fisto-core posted a version of the meme showing Kylo Ren from Star Wars: Episode VII waiting for his dad to return (shown below). In the final panel he stabs Han Solo. The post gained over 1,600 reactions and 770 shares in six years.

On July 27th, 2018, Redditor fatchawizard02 posted a Fullmetal Alchemist version of the meme to /r/Animemes,[6] gaining over 600 upvotes in four years (shown below, left). On January 24th, 2021, Instagram[5] user izukumidoriya posted a My Hero Academia version of the meme, gaining over 13,200 likes in a year (shown below, right).

On January 24th, 2022, Facebook[7] page Ōtsutsuki 神 posted a version of the meme referencing Boruto, gaining over 24,000 reactions and 520 shares in four months (shown below).
