Goku's "Don't Masturbate Tonight" is an image macro of Goku trusting the person reading not to masturbate. The format achieved initial virality on iFunny in 2020, with the original macro followed by a variety of memes featuring Goku and other Dragon Ball characters.

Origin

Prior to August 25th, 2020, an unknown user posted an image macro of Dragon Ball character Goku with the caption "I trust you. Don't masturbate tonight." On August 25th, 2020, iFunny[1] user AReason2Live made the earliest found repost of the macro, with the post gaining over 330 smiles in three years (shown below, left). Later that day, user AReason2Live posted[2] the earliest derivative meme in the series, an image of race-swapped Goku captioned "I trusted you and you still masturbated." The meme (shown below, right) received over 500 smiles in the same period.

Spread

Apart from reposts of the original macro, the format did not see further spread until January 16th, 2021, when iFunny[3] user TurboJew posted an Anton Chigurh version that received over 22,700 smiles in three years (shown below, left).

On January 18th, the iFunny[4][5] gimmick account GokuNoFapDaily was then created, which regularly reposted the original macro and posted original memes within the format. On that day, GokuNoFapDaily posted[6] a macro that received over 180 smiles in three years (shown below, center). Another meme, posted by the account on June 17th, 2021, received over 370 smiles in two years (shown below, right).



On September 11th, 2022, Redditor kindaboredmadethis posted the original Goku macro to the /r/okbuddyretard[7] subreddit, where it garnered over 9,900 upvotes in one year and helped draw wider attention to the format. For example, on September 12th, Redditor Lonely_Investment410 posted a version of the meme featuring Vegeta that received over 4,400 upvotes in /r/okbuddyretard[8] in one year (shown below, left).

On December 13th, 2022, the format was added to the pool of X / Twitter[9] gimmick account Anything Bot (example[10] shown below, right).
