Godrick the Grafted

About

Godrick the Grafted is a boss in Elden Ring and one of the demi-gods players must defeat to beat the game. He is the boss of the Stormveil Castle area, the first areas players are directed towards at the beginning of the game, and garnered a reputation as a significant early-game challenge in the first week of the game's release. His difficulty and his personality inspired numerous memes in February and March 2022.

Origin

Godrick the Grafted appeared in numerous trailers and gameplay clips for Elden Ring prior to the game's February 25th, 2022, release, including the announcement trailer (shown below, left) and the gameplay reveal trailer (shown below, right).

In Elden Ring, he is the final boss of Stormveil Castle, the first area the game directs players towards. As a demi-god, Godrick has grafted many arms onto his body that he uses throughout the boss fight.

Spread

After the game's release, many players began making jokes about the high difficulty of the Godrick boss fight. Players expressed that Godrick's slow attack patterns made timing dodges difficult, and his attacks also dealt a lot of damage. For example, on February 27th, 2022, Twitter user @LordScramble6^[1] posted two pictures of Robert Pattinson to draw a comparison between Godrick and Margit, the area's first boss. The tweet gained over 30 retweets and 200 likes (shown below, left). On February 26th, user @dankduks^[2] posted a joke about dying to Godrick's delayed attacks, gaining over 40 retweets and 560 likes (shown below, right).

Additionally, players made jokes about Godrick's personality and design. On November 18th, 2021, four months prior to the game's release, Redditor Buddy77777 posted a comparison between Godrick and General Grievous in /r/EldenRing,^[3] gaining over 160 points (shown below, left). On March 2nd, 2022, Redditor Patchshifter posted a Look at this photograph parody with Godrick,^[4] gaining over 1,500 points (shown below, right).
