GMT is a slang acronym that stands for the catchphrases Got Me Tight or Getting Me Tight. The abbreviation is typically used to describe a feeling of frustration or getting angry at a person or situation and originally appeared online in the early 2010s before spreading over the following years.
Origin
Although the exact first instance of "GMT" being used as slang for "getting me tight" online is unknown, the slang term emerged sometime in the early 2010s. One of the earliest known explanations about GMT was uploaded to Urban Dictionary[1] on July 6th, 2013, by user @lalaleelala. The post (shown below) explains that GMT stands for "getting me tight," which is an expression used when something has gotten you upset.
Spread
Online, the slang term is often used in posts about feeling upset or to express annoyance with something. For instance, Twitter[2] user @fahtimaa12198 posted a tweet on November 19th, 2018, complaining about British slang (shown below, left), which received roughly five likes and one retweet in five years. On February 12th, 2023, Twitter[3] user @franfinee_xo used GMT to express her frustration (shown below, right) with a fictional character from a TV series she was watching. The post received roughly two likes in seven months.
On July 16th, 2023, TikToker[4] @yallhate_kdot1 posted a video in which she uses the slang in the caption "like yall be gmt like gto my phone😭😭." The video (shown below, left) garnered over 880 plays and 40 likes in a month. On June 29th, TikToker[5] @hennyyconcranberryy posted a video complaining about her nail tech being late for an appointment even though the professional charges a late fee for clients. She added the slang in the caption "gmt what u gonna do for me?," which garnered over 960 likes in two months (shown below, right).
