About
Girls Like It When… refers to a snowclone popular on Twitter in which people intentionally offer absurd or poor advice for relationships.
Origin
On July 22nd, 2017, Twitter user @nopoweradeinusa,[1] formerly popular Tumblr account gotitforcheap, tweeted "girls like it when they sleep over and U have only 1 pillow case and give them a raw pillow to sleep on." The tweet gained over 1,000 retweets and 6,100 likes (shown below).
Spread
The spread of the snowclone as a meme is primarily due to @nopoweradeinusa riffing on the joke several times in the following months. For example, on September 14th,[4] he tweeted "girls like it when U sext them that you'd "pull their tampon out with ur teeth"" (shown below, left). On October 23rd, he tweeted a version which read "girls like it when you walk around outside wearing socks after it rained & come to bed with wet socks," gaining over 620 retweets and 3,400 likes (shown below, right).
Also on October 23rd, podcast E1 posted an episode in which the hosts spent several minutes riffing on the joke.[2] Around this time, other Twitter users began making jokes in the snowclone. For example, on October 24th, Twitter user @j0nline[6] posted "
Girls like it when your actually three kids standing on top of each other wearing a trench coat" (shown below, left). October 26th, Twitter user @mineifiwildout[5] posted "girls like it when u throw smoke bombs thru their window n get the ninja defuse on A to win the round," gaining over 1,200 retweets (shown below, right).
