About

Girl Staring at Guy's Chest refers to a still image from a scripted sketch in which a young woman is staring at the massive pectoral muscles of a young man standing next to her. Starting in mid-July 2021, the image gained viral popularity as a reference for redraws.

Origin

The frame originates from a scripted prank TikTok originally posted by an unknown user. In the video, a young man, presumably wearing chest pads, is browsing clothes at a store as a young woman next to him notices his protruding chest. The second of three prank victims then stares at the chest with an expression of mixed disturbance and awe. On June 21st, 2021, Instagram[1] page mult_hohma made the earliest found repost of the video (no longer available, another repost shown below). The repost gained over 12,700 likes in two months.

In late June and early July, the video received viral spread on social media through reposts.[2][3] For example, a July 14th repost by Instagram page m1rasqarov gained over 2.4 million views and 99,200 likes in one month.

On July 13th, 2021, Twitter[4] user @yedhod114 posted the earliest found redraw based on the frame, an Ace Attorney fan art that gained 40 retweets and 162 likes in one month (frame and redraw shown below, left and right).

Spread

Starting in mid-July, 2021, the frame gained popularity as a redraw reference among artists on social media. For example, on July 19th, 2021, Twitter[5] user @randrewcv posted a My Hero Academia redraw that gained over 40 retweets and 260 likes in one month (shown below, left). On July 20th, Twitter[6] user @c_killjoy_ posted a version that gained over 1,000 retweets and 7,200 likes in one month. On July 23rd, Twitter[7] user @Neon_Gin posted a Haikyuu!! redraw that received over 2,600 retweets and 13,400 likes in the same period (shown below, right).

By late July 2021, the redraw format achieved viral popularity, with multiple notable examples posted on Twitter and Tumblr. For example, on August 2nd, 2021, Twitter[8] user @Void_Dot_exe posted a Minecraft version that received over 2,200 retweets and 24,400 likes in two weeks.
