Girl Explaining, also known as Girl Explaining To Guy or simply Bro Girl, is a photo of an Argentinian woman named Denise "Dinu" Sanchez at a 2018 concert appearing to loudly talk or screaming to her boyfriend with a blank expression while wrapping one arm around him and gesturing off towards the distance in the direction of the camera. The reaction image appeared in early 2019 in Spanish-speaking meme circles and is typically used to circulate female-themed versions of the Bro Explaining meme with the genders swapped.

Origin

The first instance of the picture online was with it already in the form of a meme, posted by Twitter user @LejosEnBerlin in a now-deleted tweet^[1] on February 4th, 2019, with the Spanish caption roughly translating to the girl talking to the man as if he was gay, expressing her dissatisfaction at the information and accosting him further, receiving over 40 likes in over three years (shown below).

According to Argentinian resident Denise Sanchez (the girl from the meme) in multiple statements given to Know Your Meme in August 2022, the photo was originally of the group of people in front of her and her boyfriend, with the two only becoming the focus after the cropped image in the meme spread in 2019. Sanchez told KYM the photo itself was taken in 2018 while on a night out at a club called Chau Che Clu in Claromeco, Buenos Aires while she was singing a song to him. The reason for their expressions is because it was near the end of the party and they were exhausted.

Spread

In the following days after the initial meme was posted on February 4th, 2019, it continued spreading in Spanish-speaking meme circles online. For example, later that same day on February 4th, another Spanish-language example using the photo in a memetic context was posted by Twitter user MemesNutricion,^[2] with the Spanish caption roughly translating to the girl shouting at the boy and telling him to not trust Herbalife and other quick nutrition fixes, receiving over 1,100 likes and 300 retweets in over three years (shown below).

2022 English Resurgence

In mid-August 2022, the image saw a resurgence in meme circles, this time with English text under the name "Girl Explaining." The caption on one of the earliest English examples of the meme depicted the girl talking about astrology and how because of her sign she'd be unable to date others of competing signs, which was tweeted by Twitter user @BaldPrivilege^[3] on August 15th, 2022, gaining over 10,000 likes in less than 24 hours (shown below). On August 17th, the meme was then reposted to Reddit's /r/dankmemes^[4] by Redditor MisterSnowmax, receiving over 16,000 upvotes and 190 comments in nine hours.

Identity and KYM Interview

On August 18th, 2022, Know Your Meme discovered the identity of the woman depicted in the meme as Argentinian resident Denise "Denu" Sanchez.^[5] That same day, Sanchez agreed to an interview and to disclose her name, as well as additional context and information behind the origins of the meme that were previously unknown.
