About
Girl Cat vs. Boy Cat Debate refers to a TikTok trend in which people commented about the behavioral differences between a female cat (girl cat) and a male cat (boy cat). The trend was popularized in early December 2023, as users started to slander girl cats as aggressive and sassy, which inspired the wholesome trend POV: You Have A Girl Cat where users posted videos showcasing affectionate female cats.
Origin
Although the exact date on which the trend started is unclear, one of the earliest mentions of "girl cat" content was posted on September 9th, 2023 by TikTok[1] user @miranmurph, who added the overlay text "POV: you have a girl cat" in a video showing her female cat not wanting to be pet (shown below, left). The post amassed roughly 189,000 plays and 9,000 likes in four months. The first viral video of the trend, however, was posted by TikTok[2] user @giselle.silveira on December 4th, 2023, in which she used the overlay text "POV: you have a boy cat" to showcase how affectionate he is.
