About
GifTok, also known as GIF Tok, refers to a trend on TikTok in which TikTokers pretend to record GIF videos, repeating the same clip several times, each time slower, for comedic effect. The format was popularized in late August 2024 after rapper RRoxket released the song "Ganger," which is mainly used in the trend, and was likely inspired by The Most Amount of Aura I’ve Used on a Level 1 TikTok trend from April 2024. GifTok content is often paired with crashout and other brainrot related slang or memes.
Origin
Although it is unclear who initially created the GifTok trend, the content spawned on TikTok after the release of RRoxket's song "Ganger" on July 6th, 2024. The clip (seen below) posted on YouTube[1] amassed more than 287,000 views and 14,000 likes in three months.
One of the earliest memes posted using a clip on repeat in the format of GIFs and slow-motion effects was uploaded on August 26th, 2024, by TikTok[2] user @kardockforpresident, who edited the Oscar Proud Running meme with the text, "yo let's skip class," which amassed more than 2 million plays and 500,000 likes in a week (shown below).
Spread
GifTok content grew exponentially on TikTok in early September 2024, sparking more than 7,500 videos under the "#giftok" hashtag[3] by September 4th, 2024.
For example, on September 2nd, 2024, TikTok[4] user @wal4pres posted a GifTok video of him running out of his living room paired with the text, "Your son was born with-," amassing over 5 million plays and 1 million likes in two days (seen below).
On August 27th, TikTok[5] user @slizzymatt posted an animated video of a cracker chasing down another paired with the caption, "When the huzz canled the 2 man but I'm already 30 mins into the honey pack and it's just us." The video (seen below) amassed more than 5.8 million plays and 1.2 million likes in a week.
