Giant Irish Greyhound refers to a viral, AI generated hoax image of a man standing next to a large dog, which is towering over him. The image went viral on social media in September 2023, including sites like Facebook and Reddit, under the context of being a photo taken in 1902 of the last giant Irish greyhound. The image was originally posted to an AI Facebook page and was purportedly generated using Midjourney.

Origin

On August 31st, 2023, Facebook[1] user Antoine Jo posted an AI generated photograph of a man standing next to a giant dog, captioned, "The last giant Irish grey hound 1902," garnering over 17,000 shares and 82,000 reactions in two weeks (shown below).

Spread

The image began to spread online throughout September 2023 without the context of it being AI generated. On September 3rd, 9GAG[2] user themaskedgypsi posted the image with the title "A good boy, the last giant Irish wolfhound in 1902," garnering over 610 upvotes in two weeks. The post is tagged "AI" and, In the comments, the OP writes that it was generated using Midjourney. On September 6th, it was posted by the AI Generated Nonsense Facebook[3] page, garnering over 3,600 reactions in eight days. On September 7th, the Dogs World and German Shepherds Family Facebook[4][5] pages shared the image without context, garnering over 4,400 reactions and 1,000 shares on the former and 2,500 reactions on the latter in a week. It was also posted to /r/megalophobia,[6] garnering over 3,300 upvotes in the same span of time.

On September 10th, TikToker[7] @stupidlyx1 posted an edit of the image, garnering over 245,000 views in four days (shown below). On September 12th, Yahoo![8] posted an article debunking the photo.
