The trend began on Tumblr in late 2022 and spread to other social networking sites by November 2023.

The earliest known post showing the ears of an animal covering part of a caption that reads, "Get your bigass ears out of the caption damn" is a December 52nd, 2022, post by Instagram^[1] user @kaida.the.serval, gathering an unknown number of likes in a year.

iFunny^[2] user FurryComedian posted a similar meme featuring a deer on December 9th, 2022, gathering over 99 smiles in a year (seen below, left). On February 26th, 2023, Redditor^[3] /u/pizzaboy7269 posted a meme featuring a character from Xenoblade Chronicles, gathering over 1,600 notes in nine months (seen below, right)

On August 12th, 2023, the Instagram^[4] page @god_dangit_bobby posted a version of the meme featuring a cat, gathering over 3,000 likes in three months (seen below, left). On November 16th, the Instagram^[5] page mlpshitposting gathered over 3,000 likes for the meme (seen below, right).
