About
Gamers Turning Into Five-Star Voice Actors refers to a series of viral gameplay videos in which gamers react to in-game situations in such a way that it sounds similar to a professional voice actor's work. Spawned by a viral X post sharing two such moments in Call of Duty: Warzone and Sea of Thieves, the trend of collecting and sharing such clips achieved popularity in 2023.
Origin
The format was largely inspired by two viral separate viral clips in which gamers exhibited stellar voice acting work.
On April 4th, 2018, YouTube user Scorch Raserik shared a 36-second-long Sea of Thieves clip in which Twitch streamers TheChief1114 and Zuthar13 encounter a hostile ship in the game and vocally react to the situation. The video (shown below) garnered over 17.6 million views on YouTube[1] in five years.
On November 20th, 2022, X[2] user @itsHunterTV posted a Call of Duty: Warzone clip in which a player screams out "Stop! Don't kill me!" in voice chat. The clip received over 17,000 reposts and 151,000 likes in one year (shown below).
On January 18th, 2023, X[3] user @Bakenran posted both clips, commenting, β'gamer turns into a 5 star voice actor when theyre about to die in a video game' is probably my favorite genre of meme." The post (shown below) garnered over 42,000 reposts and 194,000 likes in one year.
Spread
On April 15th, 2023, YouTube[4] user BakedVariery posted a compilation of viral gameplay clips that fit the description offered by @Bakenran. The upload (shown below) received over 1.9 million views in eight months.
Through 2023, more clips of impressive voice acting produced by gamers were uploaded to YouTube and TikTok. The format saw a spike in popularity in November 2023 following the early access release of the co-op looter horror game Lethal Company. For example, on November 17th, 2023, YouTube[5] user Jeffrey Yu posted a clip that garnered over 746,000 views in one month (shown below, left). On November 26th, YouTube[6] user Charlister posted a Lethal Company gameplay clip titled "Hollywood Voice actor could never re-create this scream" that received over 527,000 views in one month (shown below, right).
