About

"Game Over" also known as My Life Is Like A Video Game is a song by Falling In Reverse released in June 2013. The song's lyrics compare life to a video game and have been criticized as cringey by some. In March 2020, the song went viral on TikTok, inspiring a dance trend that went viral again in March 2022 where users dance with a Nintendo Switch while lip dubbing and making a soy boy face.

Origin

On June 12th, 2013, Falling In Reverse released their song "Game Over" from the album Fashionably Late on YouTube[1] (shown below). The song's lyrics compare life to video games.

My life is like a video game, trying hard to beat the stage
All while I am still collecting coins
Trying hard to save the girl, obstacles, I'm jumping hurdles
I'm growing up to be a big boy
I battle with the evil ways, I travel far and try and save
Sorry, but your princess isn't here
I take a rest, I push the pause, level up and move along
In hopes that the next stage I will clear; I fucking passed, asshole

Spread

The song inspired memes over the following years, including animated music videos. For example, on April 7th, 2020, YouTuber RoyalElemental posted an Undertale themed AMV, garnering over 1.7 million views in two years (shown below).

TikTok Trend

On March 14th, 2020, TikToker[2] @april_flowerz posted a video where she dances to "Game Over," garnering over 2,300 likes in two years. The video's original sound inspired over 300 videos doing similar dances. On August 21st, TikToker[3] @whereisbalake posted a video following the trend where he dances with his Nintendo Switch while lip dubbing the song, garnering over 1.1 million views in two years (shown below). Much of @whereisbalake's content going forward referenced the viral video, including videos recreating it and putting spins on it. For example, on August 21st, 2021, he posted a video to TikTok[4] parodying the original, garnering over 60,000 views in a year (shown below, right).

In March 2022, the lip dub trend saw a resurgence on TikTok under the official sound for "Game Over." In the videos, users showcase joke captions that ironically compare something happening to them in their life to video games while making a soy boy face (examples shown below, left and right).

Continued Spread

On September 16th, 2022, Twitter[5] user @fyrishere posted a snippet of the song and its album cover, writing, "you'd never guess what this music sounds like based on the album cover alone," garnering over 53,000 likes and 6,700 retweets in four days (shown below). On September 18th, Twitter[6] user @spaceashes shared @whereisbalake's August 21st, 2021 version of his viral video to Twitter, writing, "top 1 saddest video ever made," garnering over 69,000 likes and 9,300 retweets in two days.
