FYM is an acronym used online that stands for "Fuck You Mean?" or "What the Fuck Do You Mean?" The abbreviation and catchphrase has been used as slang on the internet since the early 2010s but grew in prevalence and mainstream usage after 2014. The term is typically used as a provocative question or statement, sometimes in a challenging or antagonistic way.
Origin
The earliest known prominent use of the acronym "FYM" appeared on Twitter[1] in the year 2014. On August 14th, 2014, Twitter user @glamorgirl233 posted a tweet alongside a caption that read, "fym this was my bitch 😎." The post gathered over 800 likes in nearly seven years (seen below, left). On August 31st, Twitter[2] user @LeanandCuisine posted a tweet using the acronym as well, gathering over 200 likes in nearly seven years (seen below, right).
Spread
The slang term continued to spread online in the following years, becoming more prevalent around social media. On November 20th, 2015, the word "FYM" was added to Urban Dictionary[3] by user redpeanuts, where it gathered over 370 likes in over seven years (seen below).
On May 22nd, 2017, Twitter user @ThatNiggaYellow posted a quote tweet using the acronym, gathering over 130,000 likes in nearly five years.[4] On May 30th, 2019, Twitter[5] user @bebegirlgi then posted a tweet using the acronym, gathering over 68,000 likes in three years (seen below).
