About
Furret is a Normal-type Pokémon introduced in the second generation of Pokémon games, Pokémon Gold and Silver. In the two decades since the games' release, the character has become one of the more memorable second-generation Pokémon particularly because of its official size of 5'11", which surprised many players who imagined the Pokémon much smaller, comparable to a ferret.
Origin
Furret was introduced in Generation II of Pokémon, released November 21st, 1999 in Japan.[1] The Pokémon is an evolution of Sentret.[2]
Spread
Furret never had a major role in the Pokémon anime, nor was it a particularly strong Pokémon statistically.[2] Instead, the Pokémon gained fanbase online through a series of jokes about its appearance and height. The Pokémon's official height 5'11" has surprised fans. For example, Redditor TemptedByTrolling gained over 2,000 points in /r/pokemon[3] posting a Tumblr thread showing that Furret is actually taller than Charizard (shown below). Redditor i_fight_rhinos gained over points in /r/ChapoTrapHouse[4] pointing out that the Pokémon was taller than Ben Shapiro.
On February 10th, 2019, the Pokémon Information Bureau Twitter account tweeted an image of Furret, promising news to come on February 15th[5] (shown below). This led to speculation that perhaps something involving Furrets would be happening with Pokémon GO or perhaps that Furret would be a mascot for the second generation in the Pokémon Let's Go series.
Fan Art
Furret has been a popular source of fan art online. For example, Twitter user @narpic tweeted a video of Furret's walking animations, gaining over 32,000 retweets and 80,000 likes (shown below).
