Fuen Fuon, also known as Fuãn Fuãn Fuén Fuõn, refers to the theme song of Chiara, a character in the Brazilian telenovela Travessia. The song became a viral sound on social media in January 2023, being called "fuen fuon" and inspiring memes on TikTok, Twitter and Instagram over the following months, particularly in Brazil.

Origin

On December 27th, 2022, TikToker @mauriikkkkkkk^[1] posted a video showing Chiara, the character played by the Brazilian Jade Picon^[2] in the telenovela Travessia,^[3] with overlay text narrating the theme song as "fuãn, fuãn, fuén, fuõn." The post garnered 1,3 million plays and 252,600 likes in three months (seen below).

Spread

The viral video was spread across other platforms, generating new variations of the meme. For instance, during the 2023 Brazilian Carnival some Brazilians decided to do a friend's costume based on the "Fuen Fuon" sound. Twitter page @choquei^[4] showed the costume on February 24th, 2023, receiving 351,700 views and 10,500 likes in three weeks (seen below).

The TikTok account^[5] of the Brazilian media company Globo used the meme to promote the telenovela on January 20th, 2023. The video (seen below, left) garnered 1.5 million plays and 176,100 likes in two months. Another TikTok user, @euvitty,^[6] decided to lip-dub the sound in an expressive performance, receiving 547,200 plays and 127,200 likes since the video was uploaded on January 24th (seen below, right).

On January 23rd, 2023, the Twitter page dedicated to commenting on Brazilian reality TV shows @RealitySocial^[7] posted a version of the "Fuen Fuon" meme with Big Brother Brazil participant Fred Nicácio. The video garnered 6.3 million views and 24,700 likes in two months (seen below).
