"Fuck This Area In Particular" is an expression typically found in image macros depicting extreme weather events, such as isolated, torrential storms or lightning strikes, in which only a portion of the visible landscape appears to be affected.

Origin

The phrase is said to have been inspired by an aerial photograph of an isolated storm taken during a flight between Washington and Arizona, which was submitted to /r/Pics by Redditor zaikman, a friend of the photographer, on September 3rd, 2009. In the following years, the photo was reposted to Reddit twice more, in January 2010^[2] and February 2011,^[3] before phrases similar to “fuck this specific area” began appearing in the comments.

Spread

In January 2012, the photo made it to the front page of /r/Pics^[4] where the top comment was "Cloud: 'HA! FUCK THIS LITTLE VILLAGE!'" An image macro version of the photo with the caption "fuck this area in particular" was used as a comment on FunnyJunk^[5] in response to a series of photos of lightning strikes on April 28th, 2012. On July 29th, 2012, another storm photo using the caption appeared on FunnyJunk^[6], depicting a large storm seemingly over one barn (shown below). This image without the caption was reposted to FunnyJunk on September 21st, 2012^[7], where it was viewed more than 53,000 times.

In October 2012, an image macro of the initial photo was shared on /r/Funny twice, hitting the front page both times with 1,803 points^[10] and 1,630 points^[11], respectively. That November, another variation appeared on MemeCrunch.^[8] On May 13th, 2013, the subreddit /FTAIP^[9] launched as a place to share these types of cloud photos. In January 2013, a Facebook fan page^[12] for the phrase was created, gaining more than 900 likes as of October 2013.

Derivatives

On July 6th, 2013, a GIF of a cat looking around a room before knocking a solitary itme off of a countertop (shown below, left) was submitted to /r/Funny^[15] by MrChancism with the title "I should hit the road, eh ya know what, fuck this thing in particular." Four days later, Redditor BDaught submitted a GIF to the /r/IdiotsFightingThings^[16] subreddit titled "Fuck you cops and especially fuck this fence in particular" depicting a naked man going up to a wooden fence and punching a hole in one panel (shown below, center). That October, Redditor Lancaster1983 used this titling scheme again for a GIF of stray golf cart plowing into a group of people (shown below, right) that was submitted to the /r/GIFs^[17] subreddit as "Fuck this group of people in particular."
