About

Four Pictures of Jennifer Lawrence refers to an exploitable image series captioned with parodies of clickbait headlines about celebrity photo galleries. The images typically feature variations of the phrasal template "Four Pictures of Jennifer Lawrence That Will Make You Say 'That's a Picture of (X).'"

Precursor

Before the meme became a popular format, Clickhole ran an article on August 27th, 2014 titled "6 Pictures Of Scarlett Johansson That Will Make You Say ‘This Is A Picture Of A Boat’"[1] which utilized the concept.

Origin

The format did not start becoming a meme until the spring of 2016. On May 28th, 2016, Imgur user Bump4Trump posted a gallery titled "6 pictures of Jennifer Lawrence that'll make you say "That's a bear not Jennifer Lawrence.""[2] This introduced the use of actress Jennifer Lawrence in the format, which would be replicated in most subsequent uses of the meme.

Spread

In the ensuing months, more variations began appearing on various meme sites and Facebook pages. For example, eBaum's World ran a gallery of stock photos under the title "20 Photos of Jennifer Lawrence That Will Make You Say"[3] on September 3rd, 2016 (shown below, left). A post to Imgur on September 11th, 2016 played on the joke with the title "5 pictures of Jennifer Lawrence that will make you say 'hey that's only one picture of Jennifer Lawrence and 4 pictures of 4 pictures of garlic bread'" (shown below, right)

In October of 2016, the format began growing popular on Reddit's /r/me_irl subreddit during The Meme Renaissance of Me_irl. For example, a post from October 10th showing pictures of Bionicle characters gained over 5,400 upvotes (shown below, left). A post from the 13th showing Wallace from Wallace and Gromit gained over 100 upvotes (shown below, right).
