For Legal Reasons, That's a Joke is a quote said by PewDiePie in his video "Congratulations," a music video in which he backhandedly congratulates T-Series in passing him in The Great Subscriber War. The line became used as a reaction image paired with captions describing a potentially offensive or illegal scenario.
Origin
On March 31st, 2019, PewDiePie released "Congratulations," a video in which he raps his backhanded congratulations to T-Series for passing him in subscribers to become the most subscribed-to account on YouTube, gaining over 26 million views. At one point, he insinuated that T-Series may have ties with the mafia, before saying "For legal reasons, that's a joke. For serious, Indian mafia, please don't kill me, that's a joke" (shown below)
Spread
The day after the video was posted, "For legal reasons, that's a joke" began spreading on Reddit. One of the first examples was posted to /r/MemeEconomy,[1] where it gained over 12,000 points (shown below, left). A post in /r/evangelionmemes[2] gained over 110 points (shown below, right).
Many of the examples were posted on /r/PewDiePieSubmissions. User -Nalyr posted a Lisa Simpson's Presentation joke about the phrase there that gained over 14,000 likes[3] (shown below, left). User Julian_PIEnaar[4] gained over 520 points with their post using the image (shown below, right).
