About

Flying Over the Streets That Made Me, also known as Flying Over the Streets I Grew Up On, refers to an exploitable meme format that involves photoshopping airplane window pictures, replacing everything but the wing with landscapes from video games and other media. Spawned by a 2019 tweet and similar to I Grew Up on These Streets, the format saw a surge in virality in April 2024.

Origin

On November 13th, 2019, X[1] / Twitter user @duolingous posted an airplane window picture with the ground replaced with the city rug (originally posted in 2017), captioned, "Flying over the streets I grew up on." The post (shown below) received over 490 reposts and 2,900 likes in five years.

Spread

The post saw viral spread online in the following years. For example, on March 10th, 2023, iFunny[2] user U_is_r_stupid posted a screenshot of the post that gained over 3,100 smiles on the platform in one year.

On February 10th, 2020, Redditor[3] Liso111 posted the earliest found derivative meme within the format, a Heroes of Might and Magic 3 edit that received over 430 upvotes in the /r/heroes3 subreddit in four years (shown below).

Prior to 2024, the format saw a minor presence online. Notably, on June 29th, 2023, the Facebook[4] page FACEIT posted a Counter-Strike version of the meme that gained over 1,900 reactions and 680 shares in ten months (shown below, left).

On April 8th, 2024, the official X[5] / Twitter account for League of Legends posted a version of the meme, the first to adopt the "flying over the streets that made me" caption variant. The post (shown below, right) garnered over 660 reposts and 7,300 likes in two weeks.

Following the League of Legends version, the format achieved notable popularity on X / Twitter, with multiple versions of the meme following in April 2024.

I Grew Up on These Streets

I Grew Up on These Streets refers to a series of memes subverting the expression "I grew up on the streets," usually by pairing it with images of famous locations from various videogames. The original version of the meme, which paired the expression with an image of the City Map Rug, was first posted in 2016.
