Flemish Giant Rabbit refers to a species of particularly massive rabbit originally found in Belgium, which went viral on TikTok in the early 2020s for its unusually large size, particularly images or videos showing the animals being held by a human to show their bulk. Since first going viral on the platform in 2021, Flemish giant rabbits have been shown in various other viral videos and trends online over the years, with people usually expressing amazement at their size and differences in color and texture, with them spiking in virality in late 2024 on TikTok and X / Twitter as the breed garnered attention.

Origin

A known breed for a while, the first instance of the Flemish Giant rabbit becoming viral on social media took place on December 10th, 2021, when TikToker natalya.nychxlle^[1] uploaded two photos of her rabbit. In the first photo, she shows herself easily holding the bunny, which she called cute and tiny, with the second photo being stitched in to show that the rabbit continued to grow until it was "the size of a dog," which earned her over 5.1 million likes in three years (shown below).

Spread

The Flemish giant rabbit continued to receive exposure as a potential pet breed since its first viral video, with more videos of it being posted on TikTok in the following years.

On September 28th, 2023, TikToker Animal_Lore^[2] uploaded a TikTok in which an AI voice was used to talk over some smaller videos of Flemish Giants. In the TikTok, which reached over 2.1 million views, it is explained how large the rabbits can get, as well as what their temperament is as a pet (shown below).

Once again, the Flemish giant rabbit would go viral due to its size, this time on X on September 15th, 2024. The X user @AMAZ1NGNATURE^[3] uploaded a video of a farmer holding one of the rabbits, having to use two hands and holding the thing diagonally across his body, as well as using the meme Absolute Unit to describe the sheer size of the thing that same day.

This video, which reignited the passion for the rabbit on a different social media platform, quickly gained over 2.7 million views and prompted a lot of people to inquire about getting their own (shown below).
