About

Fiverr Editors refers to a video editing trend in which a clip of gameplay is supposedly given to an editor from the freelance website Fiverr and turned into a Major League Gaming video. Though originally used unironically, the use of "I Paid Someone from Fiverr" as a catchphrase to accentuate a poorly edited or absurd video started to catch on and become a cliche in late 2021, as well as a sound bite on TikTok videos.

Origin

Alongside the prevalence of video game montages on YouTube throughout the 2010s, the use of contracted editors from Fiverr became more common as the site's prominence rose. In the late 2010s, posts about the poor-quality editing jobs people received from Fiverr editors became common online, leading to a cliche. One of the earliest known and widely spread uses of a Fiverr editor for the purpose of a gameplay montage came from the YouTuber Lileikiss[1] who uploaded a video on October 19th, 2019, in which five hired Fiverr editors were given the same footage and unknowingly pitted against each other in seeing who did the best job in the fastest time for the cheapest price, earning 65,000 views in three years (shown below).

Spread

In the following years on TikTok, the use of Fiverr editors for making gaming highlight videos started to become prevalent around September 2021, with many different TikTokers uploading their own version of "I paid someone from Fiverr / I Paid An Editor" videos between late September to mid-October. One of the earliest examples is of TikToker Tyler Broce,[2] who uploaded a video of his Rocket League gameplay, with multiple future meme references edited in as he scores, earning 301,000 likes in eight months (shown below).

On October 2nd, 2021, a change to the formula was added in, with TikToker Exential[3] uploading a video in which the editor, which instead of being from Fiverr is now from Canada, included an entire advertisement in the middle of the video montage, taking the ridiculousness of the visual edits to a whole new level and earning 31,000 likes in seven months (shown below).
