First Date: She vs. Me or First Date: Her vs. Him refers to a series of Girls vs. Boys memes in which outfits worn by two people going on their first date are compared against each other, with one of the outfits breaking a norm while reflecting a person's interest in a certain media. The format gained popularity on Facebook in September 2021. The memes usually compare a woman wearing a casual goth outfit against attire such as armor from video games or unusual outfits from other pop culture media.
Origin
The original version of the meme, posted by an unidentified user prior to September 6th, 2021, is currently unknown. On September 6th, 2021, Facebook[1][2] meme pages Nirnposting and Dark Souls Seathposting™ 2 posted the two earliest versions of the meme, with the posts gaining over 2,900 reactions and 910 shares and 1,400 reactions and 1,000 shares, respectively (shown below, left and right).
Spread
On September 7th, 2021, Redditor[3] nakib666 posted a Tom and Jerry version of the meme with Tom in a zoot suit and a woman wearing a goth outfit that received over 11,000 upvotes in two weeks (shown below).
On September 7th, the format began to spread on Facebook. For example, on September 8th, 2021, Facebook[4] page Nerd Army's Shitposting posted a version that received over 3,300 reactions and 260 shares (shown below, left). On the same day, Facebook[5][6] pages CRUSH Rejections MEME and Tom and Jerry Cheeseposting posted a meme that gained over 2,500 reactions and 660 shares and 6,300 reactions and 2,100 shares in two weeks, respectively (shown below, right).
In addition to Facebook, examples of the format also appeared on Instagram, Reddit and other social media, with the caption sometimes altered to "First Date: Her vs. Him."
