About
Finn Wolfhard Snapping or Mike Wheeler Snapping is an exploitable video clip of Finn Wolfhard (known best for his role as Mike Wheeler from Stranger Things) walking toward the camera, snapping and then smirking as his face is illuminated by lights. It is unclear where the original video comes from, but was likely filmed in or around 2019 when Stranger Things season three aired, as the outfit Woflhard wears appears in that season. The meme went viral on TikTok as a green screen template in January 2023, often used alongside jokes about something changing suddenly.
Origin
It is unknown exactly where the video clip of Finn Wolfhard snapping while walking towards the camera comes from, however, it appears to have been used for promo for Stranger Things 3. An alternate angle of Wolfhard filming what appears to be the snapping scene can be seen in a July 4th, 2019 upload to the Stranger Things Netflix YouTube[6] at the 3:54-mark (shown below). It is unknown where the front-facing angle was first uploaded.
On January 13th, 2023, TikToker[1] @ur_kitty_.0 posted a meme using a clip of Finn Wolfhard edited over a Romanian flag walking toward the camera, looking forward, then snapping his fingers, the flag changing to the United Kingdom flag after the snap, captioned, "Me after getting a higher grade than my normal language," garnering over 416,000 views in four days (shown below). The meme is usually set to a sped-up version of "Give It to Me" by Timbaland.
Spread
The meme spread over the following days on TikTok. For example, on January 15th, 2023, TikToker[2] @damn.dont.hurt.yourself posted a version of the meme that garnered over 2.2 million views in two days (shown below, left). On January 16th, TikToker[3] @storytella_tiktok posted a version of the meme that garnered over 2.7 million views in a day (shown below, right).
On January 17th, TikToker[4] @josephpostingstuff posted a version of the meme about the look of iPhone apps changing, garnering over 1.3 million views in under 24 hours (shown below). On January 18th, The Tab[5] then published an article about the meme.
