About

#FeministAMovie is a hashtag game in which Twitter users post parody titles of films mocking various stereotypes and political causes associated with contemporary feminism. In mid August 2016, the hashtag began trending following the announcement of an all-female led cast for the upcoming film Ocean's 8, a spinoff of the 1960 heist film Ocean's Eleven.

Origin

On May 29th, 2015, Twitter user @integralmathyt[2] tweeted "Thighs Wide Shut #feministamovie" as a parody title for the 1999 erotic drama film Eyes Wide Shut (shown below).

Spread

In March 2016, the hashtag saw a brief resurgence among several Twitter users, with titles like "Ferris Bueller's Day On Tumblr," "All Men Go to Prison" and "Of Mice and Bigots" (shown below).[3]

On August 10th, the entertainment news blog Deadline[1] reported that an all-female led cast was being negotiated for the upcoming film Ocean's Eight, which may include actresses Sandra Bullock, Cate Blanchett, Anne Hathaway, Rihanna, Helena Bonham Carter, Mindy Kalin and Nora Lum. The following day, #FeministAMovie[4] began trending on the social networking platform, with various movie titles altered to mock feminist stereotypes and political causes. That day, the pop culture news site Twitchy[5] posted a round-up of notable examples and a collection was uploaded to Imgur[10] (shown below).

Meanwhile, other Twitter users posted movie title parodies promoting various feminist ideals (shown below). In the coming days, other news sites published articles claiming many examples of the hashtag promoted misogyny, including A.V. Club,[6] The Telegraph,[7] Metro[8] and The Daily Dot.[9]
