Fell Out of a Coconut Tree is an image macro series referencing a speech delivered by United States Vice President Kamala Harris in mid-May 2023. In the viral video, Harris continues by saying, "You exist in the context of all in which you live and what came before you," seemingly making an existential point about happiness. The video went viral on Twitter / X, among other sites, in early 2024, due to numerous users labeling the video as "crazy."
Origin
On May 10th, 2023, the GOP War Room YouTube[1] account posted a video of American Vice President Kamala Harris delivering an anecdote about how her mother used to "give us a hard time" and say "I don't know what's wrong with you young people, you think you just fell out of a coconut tree? You exist in the context of all in which you live and what came before you." The video received roughly 23,000 views in four months (shown below).
Spread
On May 10th, 2023, the videos were reposted by multiple X[2] users. For instance, X[3] user @Rifleman4WVU posted the video, writing, "Obviously drunk. This is the person in charge of both AI and the US border," gaining over 11,000 likes in nine months (shown below, left).
On May 11th, X[4] user @Sprinter99800 posted the video, writing, "US Vice President Kamala Harris appeared in public in a very strange state," gaining over 57,000 likes in nine months (shown below, right).
On October 12th, 2023, X[5] user @brownskinthem quoted a tweet with Harris' "coconut tree" monologue. The tweet read, "What yβall doing after 11 margaritas? I'm curious bout some." Over four months, the quote received over 7,400 likes (shown below).
On January 6th, 2024, X[6] user @butterflylouka posted a similar quote that added the video over a tweet reading, "Donβt smoke with me because I start acting like Kamala Harris," gaining over 121,000 likes in one month (shown below, left).
On February 9th, X[7] user @evil_female tweeted the video, captioning it, "this video is literally like medicine to me. I watch it once every week or two and every time I do I get an enduring hit of light euphoria for the next 45 minutes," receiving over 12,000 likes in two days (shown below, right).
The aforementioned tweet[7] inspired the main slew of "Fell Out of a Coconut Tree" image macros posted in February 2024, in which Harris' words were inserted into pre-existing exploitable templates. For instance, on February 9th, X[8] user @lodgepolepines used the I Am a Surgeon, Dr. Han! format, gaining over 12,000 likes in two days (shown below, left).
Also, on February 9th, 2024, X[9] user used the I Hate the Antichrist format, gaining over 15,000 likes in two days (shown below, right).
The memes spread elsewhere on social media, evident in a The Sopranos meme posted by Instagram[10] user @millennialsopranos on February 10th, 2024, receiving roughly 2,000 likes in a day (shown below).
