The original post is rumored to have been made by Twitter user @gingerr_nutt. However, the post has since been deleted and could not be confirmed. The earliest available post of the image comes from Twitter^[1] user @CuntsWatching on February 28th, 2014 (shown below). The tweet received more than 1,900 retweets and 1,600 likes as of May 2020.

Over the next 24 hours, the phrase continued to appear on Twitter^[3] (shown below).

The following day, @gingerr_nutt, who may have changed their name to @RP_TheBlade, tweeted,^[2] "Pahaha loving the bants from this pic" (shown below).

The phrase inspired a series of parodies that feature photographs of cultural figures crying and phrase overlaid atop the photo. For example, Astrology Memes^[4] sites 2016 Facebook post featuring a screenshot from the film Star Wars: Episode III -- Revenge of the Sith (shown below, left).

On January 10th, 2019, iFunny ^[5] user thaddeus posted an image edit of the meme that received more than 230 reactions in less than two years (shwon below, center).

On November 27th, 2018, singer Conan Gray tweeted the phrase, receiving more than 15,000 likes and 1,500 retweets in less than two years (shown below, right).

In 2020, the meme became a popular caption on Twitter. On April 21st, Twitter^[6] user @lipstickoutlines posted a number of images of barriers with the phrase as the caption. The post received more than 21,000 likes and 5,700 retweets in less than one month (shown below).
