The Favorite Hello Kitty Filter is a 777 filter on TikTok in which users are given two differently designed images of Hello Kitty and asked to tilt their heads toward their favorite. Once an image is chosen, the unchosen image is then replaced with an NSFW rule 34 image of Hello Kitty allowing the user to continue to choose. The filter went viral in May 2023 as users reacted to it, resulting in its removal from the app, similar to filters like the Fav Princess Peach Filter.

Origin

As early as May 23rd, 2023, TikTokers began posting videos using a now-removed filter called "Favorite Hello Kitty." The filter offers users two images of Hello Kitty and has the user tilt their head to their favorite option, the unchosen image changing to a rule 34 image of the character. The earliest videos reacting to the filter were posted to TikTok^[1] on that date. For example, TikToker @itsmenicksmithy posted a reaction that day, which gained over 25 million views in three weeks (shown below).

Spread

The filter gained viral spread on the app over the following days. On May 25th, 2023, TikToker^[2] @squeegeeweegee posted a reaction that gained over 7.2 million views in three weeks (shown below, left). On May 27th, TikToker^[3] @eccap_ posted another video reacting to the filter that gained over 9.5 million views in the same span of time (shown below, right).
