Fat Yoshi, also known as Big Yoshi, refers to an artistic re-rendering of a large Yoshi from the Super Mario game Super Mario RPG. After being posted online in January of 2017, the character was joked about and inserted into various image macros.
Origin
On January 13th, 2017, Tumblr user suppermariobroth[1] posted their reconstruction of lost artwork of the character Big Yoshi from Super Mario RPG, gaining 9,500 notes (shown below).
Spread
On January 22nd, 2017, Tumblr user rubyredink[2] posted a side-by-side comparison of a large Paratroopa and fat Yoshi, calling them "big chungus and chunk," gaining over 7,300 notes (shown below, left). On July 12th, Imgur user JosephRoseph uploaded an online advertisement parody featuring the character which was reposted to various sites, including /r/MemeEconomy.[3]
On August 2nd, 2017, @SupperMarioBroth posted to Twitter saying they had found the art they had recreated (shown below, left). On January 1st, 2018, Twitter user @SliccBicc tweeted the "first fat Yoshi tweet of 2018" (shown below, right).
Additionally, the character has seen some spread on YouTube. Cosmo the Space Doggo posted a song with the character on February 25th, 2018, gaining over 14,000 views (shown below, left). Memetendo posted a video using the character on November 11th, 2017, gaining over 65,000 views (shown below, right).
On January 31st, 2019, YouTuber anthpo posted[4] a video titled "Harassing people with fat yoshi" in which he presents and distributes printed images of Fat Yoshi at his high school (shown below). The video, set to the track "Flower Garden" from Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island, received over 9.2 million views in over two years.
