Family Impression refers to a trend on TikTok collected under the hashtag #FamilyImpression where TikTokers a member of their family acting like them in an exaggerated manner for the day. The hashtag went trending on TikTok on November 6th, 2020.

Origin

On October 18th, 2020, TikToker jord.bennett^[1] uploaded a video of her boyfriend acting like her in an exaggerated manner (shown below, left). The video gained over 1.6 million views in 19 days. Although not technically a family member, the video follows the format of subsequent videos in the trend.

On October 25th, Tiktokers kaylamuilenburg3^[2] and kynaspring^[3] uploaded versions of the video where their mothers pretend to be them in a series of clips (shown below, left and right). These are two of the earliest examples of the trend performed with family members, and garnered 6.6 million and 1.2 million views in 12 days respectively.

Spread

Throughout the end of October TikTokers slowly began uploading more videos performing impressions of family members. On October 27th, 2020, yeetmetosleep69^[4] uploaded a video where her mother does an impression of her, garnering over 944,000 views in 10 days (shown below, left). On November 4th, TikToker isabellarizopatron^[5] uploaded a video of her father doing an impression of her, garnering over 2.4 million views in 2 days (shown below, right).

On November 6th, the hashtag #familyimpression hit TikTok's trending page, encouraging more users to follow the trend.
