#FakeNintendoFacts is a hashtag game started on Twitter in which people make jokes about Nintendo, making parodies of some of the company's most popular video games and franchises.
Origin
On July 28th, 2019, Twitter account @HashtagRoundup, which specializes in spreading joke hashtags, posted a tweet reading "#FakeNintendoFacts is this week's @HashFakeFacts"[1] (shown below).
Spread
Shortly after the tweet was posted, Twitter users began participating with jokes about Nintendo lore. For example, user @angel_arle[2] posted "You can actually play as Sailor Moon in Super Mario World by beating the game without moving," gaining over 280 retweets and 1,700 likes (shown below, left). User @SuperNovaX_SSB[3] tweeted "Hank Hill was supposed to be DLC in Smash 4, but was later cut," gaining over 1,000 retweets and 4,400 likes.
Others tweeted joked about long-rumored but never-delivered Nintendo games. User @mamodxx[4] tweeted "Metroid Prime 4 will release in my lifetime #FakeNintendoFacts," gaining over 100 retweets and 1,000 likes (shown below, left). User @Itchester[5] tweeted a Waluigi in Smash joke, gaining over 80 retweets and 730 likes (shown below, right). Jokes were covered in a Twitter Events[6] page.
