The Face Under Broken Mask Redraw Trend is an art trend primarily among Japanese X / Twitter users based on a photo of artist Dolaana Davaà wearing a so-called kawaii mask that has the left eye and cheek section broken open, showing her real face. Davaà posted the photo, which is based on an illustration by artist jeauyce (JOYCE), to her Instagram page, dolikart, in April 2022. In November 2025, the image resurfaced as the subject of a redraw trend in which users draw original and popular characters wearing masks broken in similar ways.

Origin

As early as June 13th, 2021, artist kikkujo, who now goes by jeauyce on Instagram,^[1] posted a piece of manga-style art showing a character wearing a cartoonish kawaii mask with the left eye broken open, revealing the character's real face.

The image was reposted to the /r/manga^[2] subreddit that day, gaining over 140 upvotes in four years.

On April 17th, 2022, Instagram^[3] user and artist dolikart posted a series of photographs of herself wearing a custom mask inspired by the artist, writing in the description, "I found an interesting illustration on pinterest and decided to give my own interpretation of that through a mask," garnering over 4,700 likes in three years.

On November 20th, 2025, X^[4] user @Zamael91140 posted a redraw of the close-up photo of dolikart wearing the mask, drawing dolikart as ENA, garnering over 36,000 likes and 4,500 reposts in just over a week.

Later that day, they posted the reference image on X^[5] as a quote-repost, garnering over 170,000 likes and 20,000 reposts in the same span of time.

Spread

The posts by @Zamael91140 inspired a redraw trend in late 2025, where the reference photo is used to depict other characters with similarly broken masks.

For example, on November 27th, 2025, X^[6] user @GibberishSo posted a version of the meme based on the character Alex from Minecraft, the mask showing her as a cartoon and underneath showing her in a more realistic style, garnering over 160,000 likes in four days.

Later that day, Instagram^[7] user nakoneart posted a version of the meme showing YouTuber MoistCr1tikal under a mask worn by Dispatch character Sonar (whom he voices in the game), garnering over 7,600 likes in four days.

On November 29th, 2025, a version of the meme was posted to the /r/KasaneTeto^[8] subreddit, gaining over 160 upvotes in two days.

On November 30th, X^[9] user @FrameIP02 posted a version based on Garfield that gained over 17,000 likes and 2,000 reposts in a day.
