About
#EyeAmTheFool refers to a hashtag used in a coordinated 2019 April Fools Day gag by the indie webcomics community in which artists drew their characters with hyper-realistic eyes.
Precursor
The webcomics community did something similar for April Fools Day 2016, with many artists posting variations of the same four-panel comic with the punchline "Maybe… I am the fool." The idea is credited to Alex Norris of Webcomic Name. [1]
Origin
On April 1st, 2019, several comic artists began uploading comics featuring their usual characters with hyper-realistic eyes. On Instagram, the first comic with the hashtag #eyeamthefool was posted by map_entertainments[2] (shown below, left). On /r/comics,[3] the first post was by Mr. Lovenstein, gaining over 23,000 points (shown below, right).
Spread
Over the course of the day, multiple artists participated in the game. Some notable artists include Owl Turd Comix, who it was speculated started the game[4] (shown below, left), and Scribbly_G[5] posted artwork inverting the "I Am the Fool" comic with realistic eyes, gaining over 2,000 points on Reddit.
Other popular examples include a comic by Raphcomics[6] who made a joke about thinking the game was about realistic letter Is, gaining over 3,700 points on /r/comics (shown below, left). Another by ArtByMoga[7] gained over 41,000 likes on Instagram (shown below, right).
