About

[EXTREMELY LOUD INCORRECT BUZZER] is a catchphrase describing a loud sound effect that plays when a person provides an incorrect answer. Starting in October 2022, the catchphrase gained popularity online as a punchline for poorly worded and suspect jokes, most often used in combination with the She X on My Y Till I Z phrasal template. In late 2023, a graphic showing a green-and-red gauge labeled "truth" and "lie," known as the Lie Detector Meme, then saw use on TikTok.

Viral Sound Effect / TikTok Lie Detector Meme

In late 2023 the lie detector and the buzzer sound started to become popularized on TikTok with TikTokers using it over videos of people narrating their eating, among other things, usually to comically express that the person was lying. For example, on July 24th, 2023, TikToker pookieeatacookie[7] uploaded a TikTok in which they claimed that they accidentally drove to a restaurant instead of the gym, earning over 315,000 likes in six months (shown below, left).

On October 29th, TikToker simplistic111 took the upload by pookie and added the lie detector buzzer sound, helping to create the new way of using it with further examples using it for any manner of outright lie (shown below, right).

On CapCut's template for the "Lie detector meme," which was added on November 18th, 2023, the format garnered over 1,200 uses and 85 likes in three months.
