About
Evil Gang π or Evil Gang Smiling Face with Horns Emoji is a repeated catchphrase that became a form of spam used in comment chains, as well as on memes and images, in the early 2020s. The phrase, which is used alongside the purple demon or devil emoji (called "Smiling Face with Horns"), then became used in conjunction with characters that try to be evil for the sake of being evil, such as Bowser.
Origin
On November 24, 2021, the iFunny user Monkfield[1] uploaded a text conversation in which the phrase "Evil Gang π" is repeated over and over in separate text lines, before breaking the chain by telling the person that their dad loves them and to call again when they can, earning over 250 likes in two years (shown below).
Spread
Over the following months, the Evil Gang π meme began to spread and was attached to the character Bowser from the Super Mario franchise by using Bowser Jr. as the recipient of the original meme's text conversation, as shown in the TikTok posted on July 31st, 2022, by TikTok artist _Kairy_draws,[2] earning over 57,000 likes in one year (shown below).
The catchphrase then started to see use in other fake conversations as it spread. For example, on August 8th, 2022, TikToker @weezer.pfp[3] used the phrase in a fake screenshot of a text conversation supposedly coming from Toby Maguire confirming that he will be in an upcoming film called Avengers Secret War, which is slated for a 2027 release (shown below).
