Everyone Must Enjoy This Modern Rice refers to parodies of a sponsored Facebook advertisement with the phrase "Everyone must enjoy this modern rice." The phrase has been screenshot and reposted numerous times, leading to recursive iterations of the meme similar to They Did Surgery On A Grape.

Origin

On July 7th, 2020, Twitter user @V98Official^[2] posted a screenshot of a Facebook ad from a page called "Modern Rice" which used the phrase "Everyone must enjoy this modern rice" twice (shown below). It is unclear if the ad ever existed; a search for "Modern Rice" pages on Facebook yields no results that match the advertisement.

Spread

On July 8th, 2020, Reddit user NateSudfieldSuperfan^[1] reposted the ad to /r/comedyheaven, gaining over 7,000 points in 19 days. The same day, it was posted by user thatcleft^[3] to /r/ontheledgeandshit, gaining over 2,500 points. Several Facebook groups devoted to the meme appeared in the following two days.^[4]^[5]^[6] On July 9th, Twitter user @stefphanee tweeted, "Everyone must enjoy this modern Rice" with the ad. The tweet^[10] received more than 1,200 likes and 250 retweets in less than six months (shown below, center). On Twitter, people began posting screenshots of the ad and adding the same phrase. These tweets would then be screenshot again, such that the phrase "Everyone must enjoy this modern rice" appeared multiple times in the image. For example, user @i_Lean^[7] posted the phrase on July 26th, 2020. The post gained over 100 retweets and 360 likes (shown below, left). She was quote-tweeted by user @NumbZombieMom^[8] (shown below, right). The meme was covered by HITC.^[9]
