Wuhan Pool Party

Overview

Wuhan Pool Party refers to the 2020 HOHA Electronic Music Festival at a Happy Valley Wuhan Waterpark in China over a weekend in late August 2020. Images and videos of the party were posted to Twitter and many viewers reacted negatively to the lack of masks and social distancing during the coronavirus pandemic.

Background

On August 17th, 2020, the AFP Twitter account first announced the party with a tweet saying, "Wuhan wave. People watch a performance as they cool off in a swimming pool in Wuhan, China" which received over 11,500 retweets and 9,200 likes in two days. @AFP also added a video captioned, "Crowds packed out a water park over the weekend in the central Chinese city of #Wuhan, where the #coronavirus first emerged late last year, keen to party as the city edges back to normal life" (shown below). The video gained over 12,000 retweets and 9,400 likes in two days.

Developments

On August 17th, 2020, Twitter user @byulharanciaga^[1] responded to news of the pool party saying, "people are really this mad about wuhan having that pool party when they havent had a new case since june. JUNE." (shown below, left). The tweet garnered over 60 likes in two days. The next day, Twitter user @ikpsgill1^[2] compared Wuhan to the rest of the world in a tweet that accumulated over 3,000 likes in a day (shown below, right).

On August 18th, Redditor theesmaarkhan posted a meme comparing the world and Wuhan in January and now to r/dankmemes^[3] (shown below). The post garnered over 10,300 points (95% upvoted) in a day. Latestly^[4] published an article about Wuhan vs. The World memes that include images of the pool party. News Media Outlets like Forbes,^[5] CNN^[6] and BBC^[7] published articles on the music festival.
