Overview

Skibidi Toilet DMCA Takedown refers to a Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) takedown sent by DaFuq!?Boom!, the creator of the digital series Skibidi Toilet, to Garry’s Mod (GMod), alleging unauthorized use of copyrighted assets. The DMCA claim was revealed by Garry Newman in late July 2024, developer of the independent physics sandbox game, on the Garry’s Mod s&box Discord server. Online, numerous netizens criticized the takedown notice, as the series was created using assets from GMod.

Background

On July 29th, 2024, Garry Newman, creator of Garry’s Mod revealed[1] on the GMod s&box Discord server that DaFuq!?Boom!, the creator of Skibidi Toilet, sent him a DMCA takedown request alleging copyright infringement related to some of the characters from the series being utilized in unauthorized Skibidi Toilet Garry's Mod games that are "being advertised everywhere" (full DMCA below).

Later on July 29th, X[2] / Twitter user @PedroManX89[2] posted one of the earliest mentions of the Skibidi Toilet DMCA takedown, sharing a screenshot from Garry Newman's Discord messages in which he posted the full DaFuq!?Boom! notice and wrote, "You know what's worse than a Nintendo DMCA? Skibidi Toilet guys sent a DMCA too." The tweet (seen below) amassed more than 33,000 likes and 5,200 reposts in a few hours.

DaFuq!?Boom!'s Alleged Response

A few hours after Newman shared the DMCA takedown notice on July 29th, 2024, a Discord[3] user purported to be DaFuq!?Boom! wrote on the s&box server that he "did NOT strike Garry's Mod and I'm trying to understand what else is written in the letter!" (seen below, top).

Later that day, X[4] user @Abdielomar88145 shared a screenshot showing another message allegedly sent by DaFuq!?Boom! on the s&box server in which he wrote, "I contacted Garry telling him I didn't strike Garry's Mod." The tweet (seen below, bottom) received more than 410 likes and 14 reposts in a day.

Online Reactions

The Skibidi Toilet DMCA notice quickly became a viral topic on X and Reddit as Garry's Mod players heavily criticized DaFuq!?Boom!'s actions. For example, on July 29th, 2024, X[5] user @Demonic7340 tweeted about the controversy, writing "valve has the opportunity to do the funniest fucking shit ever I need this to happen." The post (seen below) amassed more than 3,600 likes and 740 reposts in a day.

Some netizens shared theories that the DMCA notice was sent by Invisible Narratives LLC, which is one of the companies responsible for the upcoming Skibidi Toilet movie announced earlier in July 2024.

On July 29th, 2024, X[6] user @Thafnine shared DaFuq!?Boom!'s Discord text message saying he didn't send the DMCA notice, captioning it, "Invisible Narratives is a company owned by Adam Goodman and Michael Bay, who you may recognise as in the news for securing the rights to make a skibidi toilet movie." The tweet (seen below) amassed over 4,300 likes and 385 reposts in a day."
