Background

On April 25th, 2012, the Champions League's semi-final match between Spain's Real Madrid and Germany's Bayern Munich took place, which resulted in Real Madrid's victory (2 – 1) in regular time but a tie in aggregate score. The game proceeded to a penalty shootout during which several kicks were blocked by the goalkeeper on each side. However, the most memorable blunder during the shootout came from Real Madrid's Sergio Ramos, who kicked the ball way over the goal and ultimately gave away the victory to Bayern Munich (seen at 4:50).

Given the high-profile nature of the match featuring a number of international football stars, both the event and Ramos' slip-up drew massive attention and media coverage from the European newspapers and football fan communities.

Notable Developments

Shortly after the conclusion of the match on April 25th, 2012, fans of Real Madrid on Twitter instantly reacted to the news with lamentable comments aimed at the Spanish defender that same evening. Soon, photoshopped images and parody videos based on the broadcast of the penalty kick began to emerge. The hashtag #SergioRamos also rose to a trending topic.
