Background

Neekolul is an American Twitch streamer, vlogger and influencer known for becoming the "Ok Boomer Girl" after uploading a TikTok video lip singing the "Oki Doki Boomer" song while wearing a Bernie Sanders T-shirt. Neekolul began streaming in both English and Spanish in August 2017. Since then she has also shared political views on Twitter where she has espoused ideals of general resentment towards Boomers, wealth hoarders, and the "1%." The video where she walked people through her new $2,000,000 apartment was posted on June 1st, 2021, on her official YouTube channel[1] where it received 315,000 views in one week (shown below).

Online Reaction

After sharing the video of her apartment, the online reaction was almost immediate, with many criticizing her and claiming she was a hypocrite due to past views she expressed about resenting wealth. Twitter was the main source of this backlash surrounding the controversy in early June.

On June 3rd, 2021, the Twitter[2] account @JaubreyYT tweeted three pictures that form a cause-and-effect story. In the first picture, it is shown that the official Neekolul account follows JaubreyYT, followed by a reply to Neekolul's YouTube promo tweet and then another screenshot showing that Neekolul unfollowed them, which garnered 220,000 likes (shown below).

In the dogpiling that followed, many Twitter users gave their hot takes on Neekolul, and some expressed that this seems to happen a lot with these types of stars who appear to be "for the people." Twitter[3] user @Marcu5y was able to produce older tweets of Neeko's that support the stance that she has always been a "not-so-good person," earning 7,100 likes on June 5th, 2021 (shown below).
