Overview

Nair Prank Controversy refers to a woman who reportedly purchased hair conditioner from Walmart only to discover when she used it that the bottle was filled with Nair, a hair-removal product. This caused her hair to fall out in clumps, leading to a trip to the emergency room and eventually her shaving her head.

Background

On July 28th, 2019, Wisconsin resident Ashley Robinson used what she believed to be Pantene conditioner she had purchased at a Walmart. After leaving the conditioner in her hair for ten minutes, she noticed a burning sensation and her hair began to fall out in clumps. She believes that the product was tampered with, and that the conditioner was replaced with a hair-removal product such as Nair or Veet. Because she lives alone, she believes this occurred before she purchased the product. She was forced to shave her head as a result of the hair-removal exposure.[1]

Developments

On July 29th, 2019, Robinson's friends Ashley Krone and Chelsea Morgan started a GoFundMe page to help Robinson with legal and medical expenses, as well as the purchase of wigs.[1] Over the following two days, they shared photos of the aftermath (shown below). As of August 2nd, the campaign has reached $1,500 of its $5,000 goal.

Robinson's mother also posted about the story to Facebook, and a screenshot of the post was posted to Twitter by user @shandiditbetter,[2] gaining over 40,000 retweets (shown below).

Twitter users began responding to @shandiditbetter's tweet with horror. Twitter user @sreyesborges tweeted "Y'ALL DON'T MESS WITH SOMEBODY'S HAIR," gaining 710 retweets and 10,000 likes (shown below, left). User @nicsgetawaycar noted the should be a felony, especially because Nair could have permanently damaged Robinson's eyes (shown below, right). The story was covered by Popbuzz.[2]
