Overview
Motaz Azaiza Facebook Ban Controversy refers to the purported suspension of Palestinian journalist Motaz Azaiza's Facebook account and a controversial tweet he made that some netizens thought criticized the Palestinian resistance in March 2024. The suspension sparked censorship concerns online, as Aziaza had been covering the Israel-Hamas Conflict, and his post instigated people to accuse him of exploiting the conflict for personal benefits and enrichment. As of March 18th, 2024, Motaz's Facebook account has since been unsuspended.
Background
On March 15th, 2024, Palestinian journalist Motaz Azaiza posted[1] a screenshot showing his Facebook account supposedly being suspended for unknown reasons by Meta, the parent company of Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp. Prior to the ban, Motaz had been actively covering the widespread destruction of the Hamas vs. Israel war, especially the impact of Israeli military operations on civilian populations, infrastructure and livelihoods within the Gaza region. The post (shown below) amassed over 10,000 likes in four days.
Developments
Motaz Azaiza's Facebook account was unbanned less than 24 hours after his Instagram post, as he shared a post[2] about a friend who "got killed by Israel while he was trying to get flour to his family in Gaza City." As of March 18th, 2024, neither Meta nor Motaz have disclosed the reasons behind the account suspension.
Online Reactions
The journalist's ban sparked a series of posts from enraged followers alleging censorship against Motaz Azaiza. For example, on March 15th, 2024, X[3] account @trtworld posted a picture of the journalist paired with the caption, "Palestinian journalist Motaz Azaiza says Facebook suspended his account for 'not respecting the Community Standards on fraud and deception.'" The post (shown below, left) amassed more than 630 likes and 450 retweets in four days. On the same day, X[4] user @MarioNawfal also shared a post about the journalist's Facebook suspension (shown below, right), which garnered roughly 4,100 likes and 2,000 retweets in four days.
Motaz Azaiza's Controversial Tweet
Amid his Facebook suspension, Motaz Azaiza posted[5] a tweet on March 15th, 2024, in Arabic saying, "Those who are not affected by the death and starvation of their people should not concern us with anything elseโฆ Cursed be all those who trade with our blood, burn our hearts and homes, and ruin our lives.โ The post (shown below) amassed over 18,600 likes and 7,500 retweets in four days.
The post instigated a viral debate on the internet shortly after, as some netizens perceived his message as an attack against Palestine, sharing theories and assumptions about Azaiza's purported collaboration with the Israeli military. For example, on March 16th, 2024, X[6] user @khalidmalinguur said the journalist is now "blaming Hamas for the destruction of Gaza and not Israel and this happened right after he landed in Europe." The post (shown below, top) received more than 13,000 likes and 4,200 retweets in three days.
X[7] user @abdallah_fayyad defended the journalist in a March 17th post, saying, "The attacks on Motaz Azaiza are ridiculous and entirely unhelpful." The post (shown below, bottom) garnered over 420 likes and 35 retweets in two days.
On March 18th, Motaz posted an Instagram Story in which he clarified his position, saying he supports the resistance but criticizes those who exploit the suffering of Palestinians.
